It has been a number of years since we covered last-minute hunt opportunities, but it seems most appropriate now with the sliding economy. Obviously, this economy placed an unexpected burden on outfitters, but even in normal years, the very best outfitters have cancellations due to lucky clients who draw that “once-in-a-lifetime” tag for a hunt elsewhere. Whatever causes the cancellation, booking agents are often the first ones to hear from an outfitter with a sudden opening, so I contacted several of the best hunting consultants I know to see what hunts they had available.
These are agents I personally know and trust for a quality recommendation. I asked them to tell me about only hunts that offer good opportunities for success on trophy-class game with reputable outfitters. I was hoping to get some real bargains too, and turned up a couple of those, including a 33 percent cut on a Stone sheep hunt and a re-priced premium elk hunt. As the season approaches, I expect we’ll see more discounts become available. In the meantime, there are some values to be had, and this report includes half a dozen great hunts for a wide variety of the most sought after species on the North American menu.
