Two years ago, I reported that the highly respected Coues deer outfit, El Halcon, had stopped booking deer hunters, and one of the partners, Carlos Terrazas, had started his own outfit under the name Chihuahua Grey Ghost Outfitters. (See Article ID 2085.) Well, last month I learned that Manuel Enriquez, the principal owner of El Halcon, once again is offering Coues deer hunting, starting next January. In my previous report, I noted that Enriquez was no longer hunting deer partially because of health issues, but now he assures me that he is able to guide hunters once again, as is his son, Manuel, Jr. Additionally, Enriquez says that one of his former associates, Wayne Curtis, will likely be joining them again. Curtis is an Arizona outfitter and a Coues deer expert with many years of experience hunting in Chihuahua. He is one of the best at using 30-power, tripod-mounted binoculars to find these diminutive deer at a mile or more away and has helped many of his clients tag B & C bucks.
Enriquez plans on taking a very limited number (only two or three a week) of rifle and archery hunters during the peak of the rut, with hunts starting on January 12th. He will no longer be hunting north of Chihuahua City, but instead will be operating out of his main lodge south of the capitol. His family has offered Gould’s turkey and waterfowl hunts out of this facility for years, and from what I understand, it provides first-class accommodations, including bedrooms with two full-size beds and private bath, plus a fully-stocked bar and a commercial kitchen where the meals are second to none. The lodge is located within a one- or two-hour drive of the half dozen hunting properties where Enriquez will be Coues deer hunting. He knows these properties well from his turkey hunts. These ranches cover over 100,000 acres, and other sources tell me that they offer great Coues deer potential.....
