If you are at all interested in hunting Coues whitetail deer, check out a nifty little web site I discovered recently. It’s called CouesWhitetail.com and is operated by Amanda Moores, a highly dedicated Coues deer huntress from Globe, Arizona. She bills the site as “the leading internet resource for information on Coues White-tailed Deer!” And she certainly has made an effort to make it that. This site, launched in 2002, is dedicated to featuring everything a novice or a veteran Coues deer hunter could possibly want to know about Coues white-tailed deer. She covers everything from biology and taxonomy to equipment and how to effectively hunt this diminutive deer. She also lists and writes about a number of Coues deer operators. That’s how I learned about Javier Monge of Mexafari Outfitters (Cell from US: 011-52-1-662-1570-914; www.mex afari.com). This enterprising operator from Hermosillo, Mexico, has been quietly making a name for himself among American hunters by providing quality hunts at reasonable prices in the Mexican State of Sonora.
When I e-mailed Moores, she told me she had hunted with Mexafari Outfitters on several occasions, and had taken a 111-inch and 101-inch buck on two of these hunts. She’d also turned-down several other nice bucks on another hunt while holding out for a certain 120-class animal she had spotted earlier. Her hunting companion collected an impressive, 118-inch trophy. This was all I needed to hear, and plans were soon laid for me to arrive in Hermosillo on January 1, 2009 for a five-day hunt.
Mexafari Outfitters has access to a number of ranches. My hunt took place on Rancho El Durazno, which has been in the Monge family for over six generations and is where Javier was born and raised. It’s about a six-hour journey east of Hermosillo in the Sierra Madre Mountains. The other properties are neighboring ranches in the vicinity. Elevations in this area can exceed 7,000 feet; it can get very cold in the mornings, with even snow at times.....
