You know we have reported that hunting in China has been suspended for the last two years and that operators there are hoping to host hunters again in spring 2009. Now we hear there are some exceptions to that suspension, including an interesting dart hunt for Asian black bear that we just learned about.
According to Wang Wei of China Adventure Travel, it is only hunting for species on China’s National Wildlife Protection List that has been suspended. That list includes important hunting species such as blue sheep and argali. But international hunters can still hunt for a number of other animals, namely roebuck, wild boar and birds, including pheasant, pigeon and chukar. Although China is a long way to go just to hunt roe buck and wild boar, Asian black bears could make the trip worthwhile to hunters would like to add this species to their list. Wei says the bear population has increased so much in Southwest China that they are causing crop damage on farms and are even damaging the homes of villagers. This year alone 26 villages in the Gongshan County of Yunnan Province have reported problems with bears, and traditional scarecrows, bells and dogs are proving ineffective.....
