I have taken all the North American animals as listed by Boone & Crocket and Safari Club International with the exception of a Roosevelt or Tule elk. I have taken six Rocky Mountain elk. Four of them were 6 x 6’s; the largest scored 320 B & C. I was looking for a larger elk, a real wall-hanger, as a kind of “last hooray,” as I’m approaching 80, and I don’t know how much more hunting I’m going to be able to do.
This is where I was in my thinking when I heard about Doyle Moss of Mossback Outfitters through a friend who has taken three bulls with Moss over the last three years. One of them made the book, a non-typical that grossed 397 5/8’s and final-scored 387 7/8’s. The year before, he took one that grossed 345 B & C. This year, he took a 360 bull. Having seen these big elk, I contacted Moss to arrange a hunt.
Moss hunts all over Utah on public and private land, but mostly public. He specializes in limited-entry elk units and spends a lot of time in the field scouting and filming elk, so he knows where to find the big ones and consistently produces them. This year alone, his clients took six bulls that scored 380 to 397 B & C and nine that scored over 400 B & C, with the largest going 443 inches. Four of these hunters were bow hunters. Last year, he killed eight bulls over 400, with the best grossing 433. It made the new Utah State Record and should rank number four in the Boone & Crocket Record Book.
