Big game hunting in Africa has always been dangerous, and here at The Hunting Report we are accustomed to passing along occasional grim news. This month, though, we have traditional bad news to pass along (namely, the killing of a PH by an animal) and a fairly new sort of bad news (namely, the jailing in Africa of two well-known PHs). Let’s start with the second kind of bad news….
The PHs who are in jail at this writing are Alain Lefol in Chad and Rusty Labuschagne in Zimbabwe. E-Mail Extra subscribers already know that the incident that led to Lefol’s arrest took place last month on the Aouk River near the Chad/CAR border. It involved nomadic herdsmen who illegally brought thousands of cattle, goats and sheep into Lefol’s hunting area. According to Hunting Consultant Fred Williams, a friend of Lefol, the following confrontation ensued:
