, subscriber S. Mauney
and his wife are very unhappy with an unsuccessful
four-day Romania red stag hunt with outfitter Marius Marutiu of Hunt
Romania. Mauney booked this hunt through Tim Herald of Worldwide Trophy
Adventures at a fixed price of $3,750 for any stag taken.
says Herald told him the area would not be hunted before his arrival,
but multiple hunters were already in the area, which was operated by a
local hunting association. He believes that European clients who were
hunting on a daily rate/sliding trophy fee scale were taken to better
areas than he was. Chief among his complaints, however, is that Hunt
Romania was not prepared for his wife to accompany him as an observer,
despite having paid an observer fee of $640. He says that the guides,
hunting district manager, and Hunt Romania's representative/interpreter,
George, resisted having Williams on the hunt, wanting to leave her at
the hotel and making her feel unwelcome.
was obvious they did not want an observer coming on the hunt, especially
a woman. George told me later that the guide was concerned about the
observer making too much noise, but he was talking on his cell phone 100
to 200 yards from a roaring stag."
says the hunt would have been a deal if there had been a possibility of
shooting a 10-kilogram or better stag. Hunt Romania's website lists a
trophy fee of more than €5,000 for such a stag. Mauney also wanted a
stag with crowns....
