The negative reports about hunts with Preston Cavner of Cavner & Julian keep coming. This time, subscriber H. Meyers called and spoke to Editor-in-Chief Barbara Crown. He read the report about Cavner & Julian in our Sept. issue and decided to tell us about his hunt with Cavner. Meyers does not remember the exact date of his hunt but says it may have been in either 2012 or 2013. He says he shot a huge 10-foot-four-inch bear, basically by himself.
"We flew into his camp to find another hunter there hunting over bait. He killed a bear, and Preston and staff had to help him with it, so I did not hunt the first day of my scheduled hunt. The next day they were still dealing with the bear skin, and Preston told me we could not hunt. Now I've been in camp two days without hunting. The third day, my guide and I and another hunter sat by the Argo until 4 pm waiting for Preston, who had gone to take a nap in the middle of the day. Finally, he came out to the Argo without even a prepared bag for the overnight at spike camp. We finally left at 5 pm.
"He dropped me and my guide off at 6 pm in the pitch dark to make camp. Next morning, my guide and I checked out where we were. He had never been there, and in fact it was his first time guiding for brown bear. I directed the guide, telling him we should go to an elevated area where we could glass. I saw two or three small bears. Preston had said he would be back at noon to pick us up. At 11:30 my guide said we should go back to camp. I said no. I pointed out that we would be able to see Preston coming back from our vantage point and said that we should continue looking for bears....
