Lane drove from his home in Minnesota to a ranch near Havre, Montana, located on the Montana Hi-Line, the northern portion of the state that lies east of the Rockies along US Highway 2. He stayed in a "beautiful and comfortable lodge with great food" on a 100,000-acre ranch.
The Hi-Line is characterized by open prairie with draws and coulees for deer to hide in, so good binoculars are essential. Lane and his guide hunted safari style, driving Big Sky Country until they found bucks they wanted to stalk. After spotting his buck, Lane and his guide made a half-mile stalk to get within 240 yards. Lane's 10 pointer (5x5) should score around 165....
