Remarkably, Jim McCarthy of Jim McCarthy Adventures
) still has a few openings for what may be the final season of Québec caribou hunting. Anyone who wants a North American 29 or similar award needs to look at these opportunities as the last for the foreseeable future. Dates for the remaining hunts vary but are generally at the end of Sept. or in early Oct. The price is $7,950 from Montreal.
McCarthy also has a Manitoba
combo, a 10-day moose, bear, caribou and wolf hunt in northern Manitoba. We've reported about some of the difficulties associated with caribou in Manitoba, including changes in migration patterns and hunts operated from fixed lodges that put caribou hunters at a disadvantage. According to McCarthy, his outfitter recognizes this problem and runs hunts from tents or small cabins to maximize opportunities. Also, the hunt is priced at $13,295 for 10 days; if a caribou is taken, there's an extra $1,350 trophy fee. Having an extra fee rather than including it in the base price recognizes the vagaries of caribou hunting in this area, and we salute the outfitter for making the adjustments needed. Dates are Sept. 16-26 or Sept. 26-Oct 7.
Butch Manasse at Hunt Nation
) has several British Columbia
moose options still available near the Yukon border. Although these moose are large and even comparable to Yukon moose (48- to 60-inch class), they score as Western Canada moose. The first hunt is a 2x2 hunt (two guides, two hunters-great for two buddies, a couple or a parent and child). Hunters fly to a remote lake, one of the best this outfitter has. The 10-day rut hunt runs from Sept. 15-24, 2017. Boats are used extensively, so only moderate physical effort is required. The hunt is priced at $13,000, including the air charter, tags and all taxes. There's a $2,000 harvest fee on the moose. Black bear is included at no extra cost. About a third of the moose in this area score more than 185 SCI....
