In the April issue we told you about an operation in Tanzania called Mkwawa Hunting Safaris (www.mkwawahuntingsafaris.com
), owned and operated by Ahmed Huwel (email@example.com
). We reported that Benson Kibonde, former chief warden of the Selous Game Reserve, was working with Huwel to make his concessions poach-proof, creating a gridwork of roads and operating year-round antipoaching patrols. Because of that year-round presence, Huwel also secured special permits to build permanent luxury camps in Selous. We plan to check it out firsthand, but in the meantime we wanted to share some feedback we received about the operation this past month. Subscriber D. Campbell of Grand Slam Club OVIS hunted with Mkwawa last Aug. and called with a glowing report about his experience. Here's what he told Editor-in-Chief Barbara Crown:
"You got this story absolutely right. Ahmed Huwel is the real deal. I spent a lot of time talking with him when I arrived at the main camp. He shared his vision of what he wanted to accomplish there and all of the things he was doing to make it happen. Honestly, I thought he was just blowing smoke. But when I saw the areas and the other camps, I realized he was doing it. He has several crews working to put in and maintain roads all over the concessions....
