I asked that anyone who killed a lion in 2012 or was booked for a lion hunt in 2013 call me. The reason was because of a delay in the exportation of lion trophies caused by the law designating that only lions six years old and older could be taken. Violators were subject to severe penalties, including fines for the safari company, the loss of the PH's license and confiscation of the trophy.
In 2012, hunters reported over and over that their PHs and safari operators made them pass on lions after hours and even days of scrutinizing them to determine their age. Out of an allocation of 200 lion nationwide, a little over 20 were taken. Despite the efforts of operators and PHs a number of those lions were five years old......
