Subscriber Harold Meyers says he killed what should be a top five spotted hyena just over the South African border in Zimbabwe
. He hunted with Graham Sales Safaris
on the Sentinel Ranch, where he was stalking elephant. He says they had a hyena on quota and while driving around looking for elephant tracks they surprised a hyena. He says it was sheer luck, as the animal ran over the top of a hill ahead of them. He says they were in the bottom of a low valley and could not chase after it, but the hyena came back to look the hunters over. Meyers shot it then. In addition to the big-skulled hyena he also shot a 48-pound elephant.
Meyers says the area was suffering from drought, and that they came across several animals that had died of thirst. The Limpopo River there was bone dry as well. Despite the conditions, he gives Sales high marks. "I've hunted with him at least eight times," he says, "and every time has been extremely good."
