Last month we reported on the Quest Rare Minerals Strange Lake Project and its possible impacts on the George River herd of Quebec-Labrador
caribou (see the January
issue). At that time, we were having some difficulty getting a response from the mining company and from the agencies responsible for the future of caribou in this remote corner of North America. We still are.
In the meantime, we have heard from people in Quebec and Labrador who say that we are looking at this story wrong, and that this rare earth element (REE) mining development would be a major boon to the regional economy. However none of those critics are, as yet, willing to speak on the record. It is our contention that this free-ranging herd of caribou is one of the world's great remaining wildlife treasures and an irreplaceable resource for hunters.....
