By Tim Jones, Managing Editor Editor's Note: While they don't get as much hype as horned and antlered game, black bears still get a lot of attention from our subscribers. We've recently received a number of reports on spring black bear hunts from Alaska to New Brunswick. As a bonus, a number of these outfitters still have hunts open for this fall for a variety of game, not just bear, and for spring bear hunts in 2014. For this fall, one has a combo bear and whitetail, and yet another can throw wolf into the mix. One even has bargain-priced openings for mule deer, whitetails and Shiras moose! Read on . . .
We'll begin with Alaska
, where subscriber Dave Baxter (Report 9171
) reports he and three friends took quality bears on a May hunt on Prince of Wales Island in extreme southeast Alaska. They hunted with Kurt Whitehead of Alaska Glacier Adventures
(907-738-5000). "Four friends all got bears," Baxter says. "One was B&C All-Time at 21 4/16 inches, and two more will make B&C Awards. The bears were in excellent condition, with very few rubbed."
Baxter gives the outfitter across-the-board excellent ratings for this boat-based hunt. He gives the total cost of the hunt as $7,270, including charter flights.
Baxter was hunting in Africa when we called him for additional information on this hunt, but we spoke with his brother Ken, also in the hunting party. He has hunted three times with Whitehead and says, "Kurt goes way above and beyond in terms of effort. We hunted mostly from skiffs along the beach, so this is a great hunt for an older, out-of-shape hunter. Our group of four took three bears in the first three days. Kurt skinned them all in one marathon session, and my taxidermist told me he couldn't have done a better job on his own trophy.....
